As promised, here is more on the new books about Sprinkles and Swirls. These two cupcakes sleep at the bakery, but each morning they board a bus for an exciting adventure. A Fun Day at Fun Park is the title of book 1 in this series published by Ready-to-Read Graphics Book, Simon Spotlight, Simon & Schuster. In this story, the cupcakes drive a bumper car, ride a zip-line, and race around the track in go-carts. They bounce and bump, zip and zoom, fly and parachute until it’s time to take the last bus back home.

As the genre name implies, easy readers are for children who are learning to read on their own. The text is short and filled with many sight words to facilitate fluency. And with short chapters, children quickly feel a sense of accomplishment. Emergent readers only need a few of these stories and then they are off to read lengthier books. It’s a necessary literary step and one that I enjoy writing.

A Fun Day at Fun Park debuts this December. Next spring, A Cool Day at the Pool will release. Fall 2022 will see the third book in this series. As with all illustrated books, the art carries the story and adds many layers of meaning, but in easy readers, it also supports the kids as they decode words that may be new to them. Savannah Allen brought these cupcakes to life. She has infused them with an energy and sweetness that is highly relatable. I am enchanted with her art from the cupcakes’ leggings, to their facial expressions, to all of the supporting characters, from carrots to pups to kittens.
